Dallas is the 3rd largest city in Texas. With an average daily temperature of 76°F it’s easy to see why the city’s population is over 1 million people. The metropolis is growing quickly as a hub for many in the banking, computer, and healthcare industries. It is also home to many colleges and universities with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport nearby.With such a large population crime is a daily occurrence. In fact, Dallas has a higher crime rate than some of the biggest cities in the U.S. including Los Angeles and New York City. One of the easiest ways to protect your home and family is remembering to lock your doors and windows. Anytime you leave the home, even if it’s only for 10 minutes, make sure your home is secure.
--Doors: The most common entry point in a home burglary is the front door. This is either because the homeowner has left without locking the door, or the lock itself is insufficient. Statistics have shown that 1 in 3 home burglaries are unlawful entry, not forced entry. This means they entered through an unlocked door or window and the home did not have a Dallas home security system. The second most common entry point was the back door. If you have a sliding glass door make sure you install a “Charlie” bar or place a piece of metal or wood in the track. This will make the door more difficult to breach.

However, one of the biggest mistakes a homeowner can make, is leaving those windows unsecure. If you leave the home, close and lock all windows. A burglar can be in and out in just a few minutes, and leaving a window open only makes it easier. You can also install window locks on the frame that keep the windows from opening more than a couple of inches. This is a great way to keep your home both cool and secure while you’re sleeping. However, it’s best to only do this on second floor windows.
Open close sensors are another great solution for securing all doors and windows in your home. They come standard from home security alarm companies when you purchase a system. If a burglar tries to open a monitored door or window the alarm will sound and immediately notify the monitoring center.
