Home Safety Advice for Philly

Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love. As the largest city in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia is home to some of the best restaurants, museums and historical attractions in the nation. With an exciting blend of culture and history, the city can also be a dangerous place at times.

This is why many families choose to invest in home security. Nationwide, larger cities like Philadelphia have always had higher crime rates than suburban communities. While living in the city can be exciting, residents must also be diligent about their personal safety and home protection. Below we’ve listed some of the most common mistakes residents make:

  • --Locks: It is very important for homeowners and renters alike to have proper locks installed on all doors and windows. More importantly, you have to use them. Whether you’re leaving your home for 10 minutes or 10 hours, make sure you lock up (this includes your garage door). With almost 1/3 of residential burglaries classified as unlawful entry, not locking your doors and windows can be a costly mistake. Also, if you have just moved into a new apartment or home, one of the first things you should do is have the locks changed. You have no idea how many keys were distributed by the previous owners.

  • --Exterior: The exterior of your home can send a lot of signals to a burglar. Therefore it’s important to send the right signals back with bright lighting and trimmed landscaping. This will decrease the places a burglar can hide and it also tells him or her that you are a responsible homeowner. If you’re going away for an extended period of time, make sure you have your mail stopped or ask a trusted neighbor to collect it. Mail and newspapers piling up at your front door lets a burglar know you’re not home. Last, if you have a Philadelphia home security system, make sure you display the yard sign and window decals. This will discourage most amateur burglars.

  • --Home security: As mentioned before, an alarm system is a great burglar deterrent. Almost all burglars hate noise because it draws attention to the home they are in. Whether you have a home security system or a dog, it’s important to have something in your home that will draw attention to a burglar. The added benefit of an alarm system is it will dispatch the local police to your home.

We know your home and family’s safety is important. With the protection of a secure home you’ll know you are safe in case of an emergency. The added peace of mind will have you wondering why you didn’t take these precautions earlier.
