KC Missouri Home Security Recommendations
Your home and family’s safety is important. As the largest city in the state, Kansas City has a higher crime rate than a majority of Missouri. While you want to keep your home protected, security home protection doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are five simple ways to secure your home before going away on vacation:
1.Mail/Newspapers: There is no greater giveaway that no one is home than a mountain of envelopes overflowing from your mailbox. Same goes for the newspapers at the end of your driveway. Instead, have your mail stopped while you’re away. This can easily be done through the post office. Another option is to ask a trusted neighbor to occasionally stop over and collect your mail. Sometimes clever burglars will even leave a flier in your door if they think no one is home. If they come back the next day and it is still there, it lets them know your home is a good target.
2.Timers: A great way to deter burglars while you’re away is to make it look like you never left. Light timers are a great way to do this. Set the lights in your home to flick on when they normally would and off around bedtime. You can also use a timer for a small radio. The noise will create the illusion that someone is home watching TV.
3.Neighbors: If you’ve asked a neighbor to stop by and pick up your mail, ask if they would mind checking in on your home while they’re there. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant – just a quick peek inside to make sure everything looks alright. Be sure to give them a key in person. Do not leave one under your doormat, in your mailbox or in a key rock. These are common places for a burglar to look.
4.Locks: It seems like common sense, but in your rush to pack and get out the door on time, do not forget to lock all doors and windows in your home. This includes the door leading from the garage to the house and all second floor windows. Most importantly, if you have a garage door opener in your car, take it out and leave it someplace safe before you leave.
5.Alarm security: A sure fire way to keep a burglar away is a Kansas City home security system. The yard signs and decals alone are enough to stop a majority of burglars in their tracks. If a burglar does attempt to break-in, your alarm system will immediately sound and the local authorities will be dispatched to your home.
