Knowing this, you should test your own home’s security. Take an hour one afternoon and see if you can break-in. It may seem juvenile, but if you can do it there’s a good chance a burglar will be able to as well.

• -.Test your doors and windows: the two most common places of forced entry are the front and back doors to your home.  It’s important to make sure you have good locks and that they are properly installed. If you have a sliding door, place a piece of wood or metal in the empty door track for added security.  For windows, make sure you always keep them shut and locked while you’re not home. If you have your windows open for ventilation be sure to use the sash stops to prevent your window being fully opened. 

• -.Test your exterior: the outside of your house is one of the most important areas to look at. After all this is one of the only vantage points a burglar has before targeting your home. Do you have plenty of lighting installed? Are there places to hide? Do you see any valuables in plain sight? These are important questions to ask yourself. Also, if you’re planning on leaving town for a few days make sure you either stop your mail or have a neighbor pick it up for you. An overflowing mailbox is a giveaway that no one is home.   

• -.Test your home security system: having an alarm system in place is only effective if it works properly. It’s important to test your system regularly and replace batteries when needed to make sure it’s in good working condition. Most security companies will also give you yard signs and stickers to place around your home. These are great burglar deterrents so make sure you have them displayed.
