Shooting - GOLCONDA ROAD AND PARKER STREET, LAKELAND, FL, FL - 02/03/2010 02:30 PM

02/03/2010 02:30 PM. Lakeland police officer shot at a suspect's car Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop when the suspect began driving away, dragging another officer with him, Lakeland police said. Police said they were still investigating and didn't release the names of the suspect or officers who were involved. The chase began about 2:30 p.m. when an officer spotted a silver Dodge pickup speeding through a school zone on Main Street near the Family Worship Center at 1300 E. Main St. The officer tried to stop the pickup, but the driver sped away. He called for backup and continued following the pickup, which finally stopped in the area of Golconda Road and Parker Street, spokeswoman Terri Smith said. When the officer approached, an altercation began. "The driver attempted to leave, dragging the officer with the vehicle," Smith said. The backup officer shot at the pickup an unknown number of times, striking and shattering the back window. With the officer freed from the vehicle, police pursued the pickup west on Memorial Boulevard and north on Lakeland Hills Boulevard before the driver pulled into the entrance of Joker Marchant Stadium and ended the chase.
