Police on Monday released the names of a railway officer and a man involved in a Saturday shooting. Officer John Ross of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. shot George Hawkins, 43, when he approached officers with a knife and ignored repeated commands to drop it, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman. Ross had encountered Hawkins about 4 p.m. at the railroad tracks along North Portland Road and learned there was a warrant for his arrest. Advertisement When Hawkins ran away, Ross called Portland police. Two city officers and a police canine unit helped track Hawkins about a mile to a transient camp.
