Home Security Recommendations for Los Angeles
Los Angeles is a leader in the music, movie and television industries. This often attracts many visitors. With over 3 million people already living in L.A. the metropolis sees a lot of traffic and related problems. The Los Angeles Police Department is very aware of the city’s crime rates but there are ways you can make your home less vulnerable.
One of the most advantageous times for a burglar to target your home is while you’re not there. This is why the U.S. sees an increase in home burglaries between June-August and around the holidays. Burglars know homeowners will be away on vacation or visiting family and will use the time for their benefit. However, there are easy ways to improve your Los Angeles home security.
It’s simple - don’t advertise that you’re away. By making your home look occupied, a thief is less likely to target your home. You can do this multiple ways:
1.Automatic timers – set timers throughout your home to turn on when your normal activity would take place. If you normally arrive home from work at 6 p.m. schedule the lights to turn on at that time. Timers can also be used for electronic devices like radios and TV’s to create background noise.
2.Mail – packages and a pile of mail at your doorstep is a dead giveaway that no one is home. Instead of taking this risk, either have your mail temporarily stopped or as a trusted neighbor to stop by and collect it.
3.Phone ringer – turn down the volume of your phone ringer before leaving. This way if someone calls while you’re gone, it won’t be such a giveaway that no one is home. Some burglars will go as far as calling your home themselves to see if you’re there. For this reason, consider having your calls forwarded.
4.Lawn and sidewalks – if you’re leaving for an extended period of time make arrangements to have the exterior of your home cared for. Nothing says “I’m not home” like high overgrown grass or un-shoveled snowy sidewalks.
Some homeowners asked a trusted friend or neighbor to house-sit while they’re away. This takes care of other small details that can be overlooked like taking out the trash cans, and opening and closing the curtains. While these details are minuet, an observant burglar may notice the change in routine. With a wireless security system homeowners can have remote access to their system. This means from any computer, smartphone or tablet they can arm or disarm their system to let someone in. This technology is convenient if you’re away and keeps your home secure and protected.
